Norwegian women's handball team is punished for not wearing tight

Norwegian officials reacted sharply on Tuesday after the country's women's beach handball team was fined for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms in competition.The Disciplinary Committee of the European Handball Federation (EHF) on Monday fined the Norway $1,768 after they wore shorts in their bronze-medal match loss to Spain at the European Beach Handball Championship in Varna, Bulgaria, on Sunday. While bikinis have not been compulsory for beach volleyball players since 2012, International Handball Federation (IHF) rules state "female athletes must wear bikini bottoms" and that these must have "a close fit", be "cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg" and a side depth of no more than 10 centimetres. Male players wear shorts.Norway's Minister for Culture and Sports, Abid Raja, tweeted his bewilderment with the decision."It's completely ridiculous. They complied, until their last match.Norway’s Handball Federation announced it would pay the fine for their players — and also backed the athletes in a post on the team’s Instagram page."We are very proud of these girls who are at the European Championships in beach handball. They raised their voice and told us that enough is enough. We are the Norwegian Handball Federation and we stand behind you and support you. We will continue to fight to change the international regulations for attire, so that players can play in the clothing they are comfortable with."
