HOW TO DECIDE THE BEST MODEL FOR YOU If you want to know what model we recommend, we need to know: 1. Whether you need a long or a short backlength. 2. The maximum volume you need (in litres). 3. The type of activities you are doing eg. hiking/ tramping, mountaineering, running, biking etc. 4. The type of country eg. rough, scrub bashing etc (you need a Stronglite); tracks and open country (an Ultralite is good). WHAT IS MY BACKLENGTH, SHORT OR LONG & WHAT IS MY HIPBELT SIZE, SMALL, MEDIUM OR LARGE? The Daylites and Ultralites (day to mid-volume packs) i.e. Pace & Mountain Magic, Liquid Agility and Mobile Intention, come in one backlength because they have a long range of backlength adjustment. Shoulder strap sizes are interchangeable. They also have sewn in hipbelts in one size to fit all body sizes. All the larger models of Ultralites and all the Stronglites come in two backlengths, S and L. To determine which size is best, you need to determine your backlength: the distance from the top of your hip bones to the mid- point of your shoulder (where the shoulder strap goes over the shoulder). One way to do this accurately is to stand with your back against a wall with a hard covered book and pencil in hand. Place the book vertically against your side with the bottom edge of the book resting on top of your hipbone and the back edge against the wall. Mark the height of the lower edge of the book on the wall. This is the height of the top of your hips. Now place the book vertically by the side of your head, with the back edge resting against the wall and the bottom edge resting on the mid-point of one shoulder (half way between your neck and the end of your shoulder - this is where the center of the shoulder straps should lie). Mark the height of the bottom edge of the book on the wall. This is the height of your shoulders. Now measure the difference in height between the 2 marks on the wall - this is your backlength. If it is 38 cms or less, you need a short backlength; if it is more than 38 cms, you need a long backlength. The large models with Pelvic-Form Hipbelts have 3 hipbelt sizes. The medium size, M is standard. To decide whether this will fit, or whether you need a S or L size, use a tape measure to determine your waist size, as the top of the hip belt goes around your waist. If this distance is less than 85cm choose the S size, if it is greater than 95 cm, choose the L size. WHAT VOLUME DO YOU NEED The volume of pack needed by different people for a certain length of trip varies considerably between individuals depending on gear choice and is also affected by the season and the terrain. Packing your gear in a pack of known volume is a good way to determine your volume requirements. Note that the Ultralite family includes the Balance Pockets as standard, therefore the specified volume is with the Balance Pockets. With the Daylites, Stronglites and Travelites, the volume specified is only for the pack itself, so adding your choice of Balance Pockets or Bags will increase the total volume accordingly. Therefore you need to add the volume of the Balance Pockets or Balance Bags to the volume of the pack to get the total volume to match your requirements. Now consider the longest trip you will do with the pack and the gear required. This will determine the volume of pack needed. Now think about the predominant use and choose the most appropriate family for your needs. NOTE: We strongly recommend using Balance Pockets or Balance Bags in all situations except technical climbing. They will reduce energy use and body pain compared to carrying all your load behind in a backpack. The instant gear access of the pockets also increases efficiency, as you do not have to stop and take the pack off to access items needed during the day. Specific purpose Balance Pockets, Bags and clip-on accessories allow you to customise your pack for different activities. MODEL FAMILIES Our pack model range is divided into different families, based on the type of activity you are doing and the type of country you'll be using the product. The families: MINILITESOur Minilite family of daypacks crystalises Aarn's key innovations of natural balance, movement and shaping into elegant simplicity. The sculptured backpanels mould to your body shape under load while maintaining great back ventilation. Flow-systems give maximum agility. For instant gear to gear and small items, Balancing Pockets are built-in to the shoulder straps. To increase capacity and improve balance further, add optional Balance Bags. DAYLITESHighly versatile daypacks which carry all your needs for a days activities. This ranges from urban, cycling and travel plus walking in the front country, to all back-country adventures such as hiking, skiing and climbing. Balance Pockets and Bags can be added to increase capacity, optimise gear access, minimise effort and strain and create superb balance. ULTRALITESModels from daypack to expedition size that are optimised for fast and light adventures in the front country, on tracks and across open tops. Balance pockets are standard equipment on these models so the volumes specified include them. STRONGLITES Models from overnight to expedition size that are optimised for all back country and climbing adventures. Balance Pockets or Bags need to be added to achieve the most outstanding benefits over conventional packs so the volume of the Pockets you choose needs to be added to the pack volume to determine the total capacity. TRAVELITES A new range for trekking and travelling which we will progressively introduce over the next year. Once you have a general idea of how and where you will use your packs, you can choose the family required. In order to nail down your choice to the specific model required, naturally you will need to know the volume of the pack that your require, based on the maximum length of trip you will use the pack for and the size and type of gear you need for such a trip. Also as your backlength determines the volumes available in each model, measuring your backlength is the next thing to do.
