Description

Ivy City Railroad Yard overall elevated view of tracks, facilities and locomotive areas, as seen from a bridge in Washington, D.C., June 1976. The vacant area in the right side foreground was a former portion of the yard where the rails have been removed, but some remaining ties are still in place. To the far right is an incoming Chessie System empty unit coal train of black hoppers, most former C&O cars, heading in the direction toward the camera. The Chessie train is turning onto a bridge, out of view, that crosses over the railroad yard and the train will continue on the mainline in a northern direction. At a point approximately a mile farther north on the Chessie mainline the direct route tracks connecting to Washington Union Terminal will merge with this line. On the back side of the Chessie train is the two track mainline of the electrified Northeast Corridor. To the right of center is the diesel electric locomotive ready tracks where Amtrak and Southern Railway locomotives are currently awaiting their next assignments. In the center area is the electric locomotive "Motor Stop" service area, To the left side are located more diesel electric locomotive service tracks and leads heading to what remains of the old roundhouse and the turntable. To the far left out of view is the Amtrak train storage area. The whole yard area is vastly changed today with new tracks being installed, old tracks removed, new facilities installed and old facilities torn down. Actually many of the areas buildings seen in this photo have been demolished and new buildings, parking lots and highways are located in the area today.
