Flags%20of%20Our%20Nation%20Maryland%20%20%20Issue%20Date%3A%20August%206%2C%202009%20City%3A%20Washington%2C%20DC%20%20Maryland%20Becomes%20Seventh%20U.S.%20State%26nbsp%3B%20%20On%20April%2028%2C%201788%2C%20Maryland%20was%20the%20seventh%20state%20to%20ratify%20the%20US%20Constitution%2C%20an%20act%20that%20admitted%20it%20as%20America%26rsquo%3Bs%20seventh%20state.%20%20Spanish%20explorers%20became%20the%20first%20Europeans%20to%20reach%20the%20Maryland%20region%20when%20they%20explored%20the%20Chesapeake%20Bay%20in%20the%201500s.%26nbsp%3B%20These%20explorers%20found%20Algonquian%20tribes%2C%20including%20the%20Choptank%2C%20Nanticoke%2C%20Patuxent%2C%20Portobago%2C%20and%20Wicomico%2C%20as%20well%20as%20some%20Susquehannock%20Indians%20living%20in%20the%20area.%20In%201608%2C%20Captain%20John%20Smith%20of%20Virginia%20sailed%20the%20Chesapeake%20Bay%20north%20into%20the%20Maryland%20region.%26nbsp%3B%20His%20written%20description%20of%20the%20area%20brought%20more%20visitors.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201631%2C%20William%20Clairborne%20opened%20a%20trading%20post%20on%20Kent%20Island%20in%20the%20Chesapeake%20Bay%20%26ndash%3B%20this%20was%20the%20first%20colonial%20settlement%20in%20Virginia.%20King%20Charles%20I%20granted%20this%20area%20to%20George%20Calvert%2C%20the%20first%20Lord%20of%20Baltimore%2C%20in%201632.%26nbsp%3B%20But%2C%20Calvert%20died%20before%20he%20could%20sign%20the%20charter%2C%20so%20his%20son%2C%20Cecilius%2C%20the%20second%20lord%20of%20Baltimore%2C%20took%20his%20place.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20region%20was%20named%20Maryland%20after%20the%20wife%20of%20Charles%20I%2C%20Queen%20Henrietta%20Maria.%26nbsp%3B%20Calvert%20sent%20colonists%20to%20Maryland%20on%20two%20ships%2C%20the%26nbsp%3BArk%26nbsp%3Band%20the%26nbsp%3BDove.%26nbsp%3B%20They%20arrived%20at%20St.%20Clements%20Island%20in%20the%20Potomac%20River%20in%201634.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20colonists%20established%20St.%20Mary%26rsquo%3Bs%20City%20near%20the%20southern%20portion%20of%20the%20Western%20Shore.%20%20Calvert%20appointed%20his%20brother%2C%20Leonard%2C%20as%20governor%20of%20the%20colony.%26nbsp%3B%20A%20Roman%20Catholic%20forced%20to%20support%20the%20Church%20of%20England%2C%20Calvert%20determined%20that%20Maryland%20should%20practice%20religious%20tolerance%2C%20and%20the%20colony%20passed%20a%20law%20protecting%20religious%20freedom%20in%201649.%26nbsp%3B%20This%20religious%20tolerance%20attracted%20many%20settlers%20from%20other%20colonies.%20%20In%20the%201700s%2C%20Maryland%20and%20Pennsylvania%20disagreed%20on%20their%20boundary%20line.%26nbsp%3B%20Charles%20Mason%20and%20Jeremiah%20Dixon%20were%20contracted%20to%20survey%20the%20line%20in%201763.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20survey%20was%20completed%20in%201767%2C%20and%20the%20boundary%20became%20known%20as%20the%20Mason-Dixon%20line.%20%20%26nbsp%3BMaryland%20was%20involved%20in%20many%20protests%20against%20British%20policy%20before%20the%20outbreak%20of%20the%20Revolutionary%20War.%26nbsp%3B%20Shortly%20after%20the%20Boston%20Tea%20Party%2C%20Marylanders%20burned%20the%20British%20ship%26nbsp%3BPeggy%20Stuart%26nbsp%3Band%20its%20cargo%20of%20tea%20in%20Annapolis.%26nbsp%3B%20At%20the%20First%20Continental%20Congress%20in%201774%2C%20Maryland%20voted%20against%20conducting%20trade%20with%20Britain.%26nbsp%3B%20After%20the%20war%20started%2C%20Maryland%20delegates%20at%20the%20Second%20Continental%20Congress%20voted%20for%20independence.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20state%20adopted%20its%20first%20state%20constitution%20on%20November%208%2C%201776.%20%20Very%20little%20fighting%20took%20place%20on%20Maryland%26rsquo%3Bs%20soil%20during%20the%20American%20Revolution.%26nbsp%3B%20However%2C%20Maryland%20supplied%20many%20troops%2C%20and%20its%20industries%20built%20ships%20and%20cannons%20for%20colonial%20forces.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20Continental%20Congress%20moved%20the%20capital%20to%20Baltimore%20from%20December%201776%20to%20March%201777%2C%20when%20Philadelphia%20was%20threatened%20by%20British%20troops.%26nbsp%3B%20After%20the%20war%2C%20the%20Continental%20Congress%20met%20at%20the%20Maryland%20State%20House%20in%20Annapolis%20from%201783%20to%201784.%26nbsp%3B%20George%20Washington%20resigned%20his%20commission%20as%20the%20commander%20in%20chief%20of%20the%20Continental%20Army%20in%20the%20State%20House.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20Treaty%20of%20Paris%2C%20which%20ended%20the%20war%2C%20was%20also%20signed%20there.%20Maryland%20ratified%20the%20United%20States%20Constitution%20on%20April%2028%2C%201788%2C%20making%20it%20the%20seventh%20state%20to%20join%20the%20Union.%26nbsp%3B%20Maryland%20gave%20the%20nation%20the%20land%20to%20form%20the%20District%20of%20Columbia%2C%20the%20capital%20of%20the%20United%20States%2C%20in%201791.%20%20A%20great%20deal%20of%20the%20fighting%20during%20the%20War%20of%201812%20took%20place%20in%20or%20near%20Maryland.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201813%2C%20the%20British%20began%20raiding%20towns%20and%20farmhouses%20along%20the%20Chesapeake.%26nbsp%3B%20British%20forces%20sailed%20up%20the%20Patuxent%20River%20and%20defeated%20American%20forces%20at%20the%20Battle%20of%20Bladensburg%20on%20August%2024%2C%201814.%26nbsp%3B%20After%20that%20victory%2C%20the%20British%20went%20on%20to%20storm%20Washington%2C%20D.C.%2C%20where%20they%20burned%20the%20Capitol%20and%20several%20other%20government%20buildings.%26nbsp%3B%20On%20September%2012%2C%201814%2C%20British%20troops%20attacked%20Baltimore%20while%20British%20ships%20bombarded%20Fort%20McHenry%20from%20the%20Patapsco%20River.%26nbsp%3B%20Francis%20Scott%20Key%20wrote%20%26ldquo%3BThe%20Star-Spangled%20Banner%26rdquo%3B%20after%20watching%20the%20British%20bombardment%20of%20the%20fort.%26nbsp%3B%20This%20poem%20was%20later%20set%20to%20music%20and%20became%20the%20national%20anthem%20of%20the%20United%20States.%20%20At%20the%20start%20of%20the%20Civil%20War%2C%20Maryland%20was%20placed%20in%20a%20difficult%20position.%26nbsp%3B%20It%20was%20a%20slave%20state%2C%20yet%20as%20one%20of%20the%2013%20original%20colonies%2C%20it%20was%20devoted%20to%20the%20Union.%26nbsp%3B%20When%20Virginia%20joined%20the%20Confederacy%2C%20the%20fate%20of%20Washington%2C%20D.C.%2C%20was%20firmly%20in%20the%20hands%20of%20Maryland.%26nbsp%3B%20If%20it%20joined%20the%20Confederacy%2C%20then%20the%20capital%20would%20lie%20deep%20in%20Southern%20territory.%26nbsp%3B%20Maryland%20did%20join%20the%20Union%2C%20but%20many%20Marylanders%20joined%20Confederate%20forces.%20%20Several%20major%20Civil%20War%20battles%20were%20fought%20in%20Maryland.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201862%2C%20General%20Robert%20E.%20Lee%20invaded%20the%20state.%26nbsp%3B%20His%20army%20fought%20Union%20forces%20at%20the%20Battle%20of%20Antietam%2C%20near%20Sharpsburg%2C%20on%20September%2017%2C%201862.%26nbsp%3B%20Lee%20crossed%20through%20Maryland%20in%20June%201863%20to%20fight%20the%20Battle%20of%20Gettysburg%20in%20Pennsylvania.%26nbsp%3B%20Troops%20under%20Confederate%20General%20Jubal%20A.%20Early%20crossed%20the%20Potomac%20River%20and%20defeated%20a%20Union%20force%20in%20the%20Battle%20of%20Monocacy%2C%20near%20Frederick%2C%20on%20July%209%2C%201864.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20state%20adopted%20an%20antislavery%20constitution%20in%201864.%20%20Even%20before%20the%20Civil%20War%2C%20Maryland%2C%20especially%20the%20city%20of%20Baltimore%2C%20had%20advanced%20industrially.%26nbsp%3B%20Its%20location%20on%20the%20Chesapeake%20Bay%2C%20which%20has%20several%20excellent%20harbors%2C%20further%20enhanced%20its%20economic%20growth.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20Baltimore%20and%20Ohio%20Railroad%20and%20the%20Chesapeake%20and%20Ohio%20Canal%20gave%20the%20state%20a%20westward%20shipping%20route.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20Chesapeake%20and%20Delaware%20Canal%20allowed%20goods%20to%20be%20shipped%20eastward.%20Peter%20Cooper%20built%20America%26rsquo%3Bs%20first%20coal-burning%20steam%20locomotive%2C%20the%26nbsp%3BTom%20Thumb%2C%20in%201830.%20%20Maryland%20was%20hit%20particularly%20hard%20during%20the%20Great%20Depression.%26nbsp%3B%20However%2C%20with%20the%20start%20of%20World%20War%20II%2C%20economic%20activity%20resumed.%26nbsp%3B%20Large%20numbers%20of%20people%20moved%20to%20Maryland%20from%20the%20Appalachian%20Mountain%20region%20and%20from%20the%20South.%26nbsp%3B%20New%20cities%20and%20communities%20were%20built%20between%20Baltimore%20and%20Washington%2C%20D.C.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20state%20also%20did%20much%20to%20improve%20its%20transportation%20systems.%26nbsp%3B%20In%201950%2C%20Baltimore%26rsquo%3Bs%20Friendship%20International%20Airport%2C%20now%20called%20Baltimore-Washington%20International%20Airport%2C%20was%20opened.%26nbsp%3B%20Between%201952%20and%201963%2C%20the%20state%20completed%20several%20major%20construction%20projects%2C%20including%20the%20Baltimore%20Harbor%20Tunnel%2C%20the%20Chesapeake%20Bay%20Bridge%2C%20the%20John%20F.%20Kennedy%20Expressway%2C%20and%20an%20expressway%20connecting%20Baltimore%20and%20Washington%2C%20D.C.%20%20Maryland%20is%20a%20center%20for%20space%20research%20and%20production.%26nbsp%3B%20NASA%26rsquo%3Bs%20Goddard%20Space%20Flight%20Center%20is%20located%20in%20Greenbelt.%26nbsp%3B%20The%20state%20is%20also%20focusing%20on%20an%20environmental%20cleanup%20of%20the%20Chesapeake%20Bay.%26nbsp%3B%20This%20large-scale%20project%20involves%20several%20other%20states%20as%20well.%20%20%26nbsp%3B
